Advertising and Cost Cutting

Cost cutting is always painful and it is something that you have to think many times before you apply it to your advertising department. The problem with reducing the budget on advertising is that there are the big players who don’t need to cut costs. In fact, sometimes it is during the cramping financial situations when the big players really flex their muscles. The new businesses and small scale ones would be either left with the option of finding alternate ways of advertising their business or shut down.

When choosing the budget for advertising, one should always calculate it by taking in calculation both investment and profits. Flexibility is very important, as there will be times when your advertising strategies will be doing well and profits would be increasing. At this point of time sticking to the original low budget might be too defensive and could cost you significant growth opportunity. On the other hand, if you can see that your strategy is not working, then it is important to re-strategize and if possible reduce the budget to make up for the losses. This way you can better control the budget for advertising.

There is always the option of using cost effective advertising methods. Banner stand has been one of the most used tool for advertising; thankfully they are not that expensive and can certainly benefit any business. If it’s properly done it can be as effective as word of mouth marketing. Another very good option is using the social media. It is very cost effective and can be as good as free if you can do it yourself. One of the major problems with this approach is that many of the marketing heads are not well versed with this medium. It is always a good idea to get some young blood to do this for you.
